2024 World Triathlon Para Series set for Swansea return in June

The 2024 World Triathlon Para Series will return for a third time to the SA1 Waterfront on Saturday 22 June this year.

The South Wales city will again welcome the very best paratriathletes from across the world this summer. Britain’s top paratriathletes will be competing for vital Paris 2024 Paralympic Games qualification points in front of a home crowd.
2023’s event saw a glut of medals and top ten places for British paratriathletes, with gold for Dave Ellis, guided by Luke Pollard and silver for Oscar Kelly, guided by Charlie Harding, in the Men’s PTVI category. Mel Nicholls took home bronze in the Women’s PTWC category, with Claire Cashmore and Lauren Steadman taking silver and bronze respectively in the Women’s PTS5 category. Hannah Moore secured silver in the Women’s PTS4 race.

As well as bringing the world’s best paratriathletes to Swansea, the event also provides an opportunity for disabled people of all sporting levels to engage with physical activity. They will get the opportunity to experience the same course as the elite races, with up-and-coming British paratriathletes racing as well as people new to the sport.

There are also plans for an event for children and young people, introducing them to the sport and giving them the opportunity to be part of this inspiring event.
This is part of Welsh Triathlon’s legacy programme to bring swim, bike, run to schools across the city and region.

Andy Salmon, British Triathlon CEO, said: “Having organised Britain’s only standalone World Triathlon Para Series event two years running, I’m delighted we are returning to Swansea in June 2024. As we move into a Paralympic year, this event will offer athletes the opportunity to gain vital qualification points ahead of team selection.
“Alongside the elite racing this year, the event will play host the British Paratri Super Series and include an aquathlon for children. We expect the day to be a great one for families with a whole host of exciting events planned in the event village.
“Working with partners at UK Sport, Welsh Government, Swansea City Council and Welsh Triathlon, we are excited to once again welcome paratriathletes from around the world to Britain.”

Esther Britten, Head of Major Events at UK Sport: “Funded by The National Lottery, we’ve carefully built a programme of major events that will help GB athletes qualify and prepare for the Paralympic Games. As we continue the journey towards Paris 2024, I’m delighted that we are able to give athletes this opportunity to compete on home soil.”
Dawn Bowden, Welsh Government Deputy Minister for Arts and Sport, said: “I’m delighted that we’re able to support British Triathlon in bringing this event back to Swansea for a third year – and that the city will, once again, get a chance to demonstrate its expertise in successfully hosting a major para sport event.
“This reaffirms our commitment to the development of disability sport and providing a further platform to promote sporting opportunities for disabled people. The event also makes the most of the city’s fantastic waterfront location – and we look forward to welcoming the athletes to Wales and Swansea next year.”

Robert Francis-Davies, Swansea City Council’s cabinet member for investment, regeneration and tourism, said: “We look forward to welcoming the World’s best para triathletes of athletes and supporters for the 2024 World Triathlon Para Series, Swansea’s third staging of the event.
“We’re a city with a great passion for sport, set within the backdrop of a fabulous natural environment for everybody to enjoy. We’re excited that local people will once again be inspired to enjoy sport on the weekend of June 22-23.
“The World Triathlon Para Series provides a boost to our local economy and we’ll make sure, once again, that local residents, businesses and organisations are fully informed about opportunities and road changes for the event’s big weekend.
“It’ll be another big summer of events for Swansea next year with IRONMAN 70.3 Swansea on July 14 and the Wales Airshow is on July 6-7. There’ll also be more big announcements to follow.”
